Finally, the oral presentation has ended! Even though it was just a mere 5 minutes for my part and around 20 minutes for my whole group’s presentation, the amount of work and effort that we had put in were indeed a lot. I have started preparing for the slides and presentation text a few days before the day itself.
After we were each done with our slides, May compiled everything together and we then reviewed and commented on each other’s slides to check for consistency and mistakes. For our slides, we didn’t go for fancy and elaborative layout. What we did was to keep them simple and have less words on them but more graphs/ animations so that our audience could understand us better and easy for them to digest the content. Once we were done with the slides, we then met up together and rehearsed a few times. In fact, I think we had quite a lot of rehearsals. I even practiced secretly when my roommate was asleep! These rehearsals helped me to prepare well for my part and familiarize myself with the flow of our presentation. After all the rehearsals, I felt pretty much confident! :)
* Jeng jeng jeng * Then comes the day of the presentation! As usual, I was very nervous, especially after the impressive presentation from Team RZY. However, this time I could feel something different. I felt a bit more confident compared to the peer teaching session even though I was still very nervous. I have tried to appear less nervous but I am not too sure whether I have done a good job of that or not. Maybe you guys can give me your opinions on that or I will go and watch the video! :) I have also prepared cue cards as I tend to forget what I am supposed to say when I am standing in front of an audience and all their attentions are on me. Sometimes, I do wonder whether I have stage fright and as much as I want to keep my nervousness at bay and tried not to refer to the cue cards, I got especially nervous when Sam waved at me ( signaling that my time was almost up). Immediately at that instance I forgot what I wanted to say and referred a lot to the cue cards. However, I was quite happy because our presentation was quite a smooth one and there were no major hiccups even though I think I could have fared better during the Q & A session. I knew how to answer those questions just that during that moment, when all eyes were staring at me, my mind just couldn’t work! :( Hence, I am thankful for my supportive teammates!
All in all, I have an interesting and fun time working with my teammates for this oral presentation. I believe that I have done better compared to my peer teaching session but I know that there is still much room for improvement. Not to forget also, I would also like to sincerely thank all my teammates! You guys are the best teammates that one can get! :)
Hi Cuishan!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on completing the oral presentation!!
Having worked with you for our peer teaching, I realised that you are really very nervous during presentations because I remember seeing you hand shaking when we were presenting on our peer teaching topic! However, I felt that you did a good job this time as you looked more confident of yourself during your team's presentation.
On a side note, I realised that your stance was quite tensed up and you looked quite fierce when you did not smile at all during the presentation. I am guilty of this too, but I realised that smiling can really lighten the atmosphere while having a stern face can actually be quite intimidating. :/
Nevertheless, the pace and tone was good and keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Qianwen.
Hi Cui Shan!
ReplyDeleteIt was a wise choice to use a simple layout for your presentation! The slides were very clean and the majority of the slides were relatively easy to follow. Good job there!
I can identify with your problem of feeling nervous during presentation. As what Ms. Lim has suggested, you can try to look at the friendly faces and try to smile to mask your anxiety and portray your confidence. :)
Cheers,
Kai Liang
Hi Cui Shan!
ReplyDeleteMy initial impression of you at the beginning of the course was that you are a shy and quiet girl. But after peer teaching and the final oral presentation, I see that you have gained more confidence in presenting in front of an audience (:
I think it was distracting for someone to be waving at you during your presentation and could cause your mind to go blank because of that interruption. Should you have known, you would have prepared for it and therefore reduce the nervousness. However it may not be easy to predict what will happen during a presentation, and so through this experience I’m sure you are now more prepared for unforeseen circumstances that may come your way during presentations in future!
I think that because you are tall, you will tend to look more intimidating to the audiences if you are expressionless or simply not smiling. So do smile more often because I believe that if you smile at your audience, you can make them like you better and perhaps get a few more friendly faces from the audience to boost your confidence as well (:
Lastly, I agree with Qianwen and feel that your tone and pace were appropriate (:
Cheers,
Siyuan
Hi Cuishan!
ReplyDeleteFrom an audience point of view, you've certainly displayed more confidence in the final oral presentation! I saw that you were more comfortable standing in front and presenting to the class this time, and I feel so happy for you :)
Also, I noticed you tried to vary your tone to show emphasis on certain points, which helped me follow the presentation better too. Furthermore, when faced with a tough question, you took on the challenge calmly, and this reflected positively from an audience point of view.
I do agree with Qianwen, however, regarding your stance. Do try to relax more, which I'm sure won't be much of a problem as you seem to be more comfortable presenting now :)

@qianwen :)
ReplyDeleteSorry for my late reply :(
Yup, I am always very very nervous when I am standing in front of an audience and I dont feel comfortable when all their attention are focused on me.
I guess for this time round, all the rehearsals before the presentation really helped me in familiarising myself with the flow of the presentation. Hence, I dont feel as nervous as before.
And I didnt realise I wasnt smiling at all during the presentation :/ Guess I was too nervous already on that day. Anyway, thanks for you advice and jiayou for your finals! :)
@kailiang :)
ReplyDeleteAgain, sorry for my late reply :)
thanks for your compliments on our slides. I fell that the layout for your group's presentation slides was quite nice and looked very professional too! Good job on that!
And yup, I will try to smile more next time for my other presentations :) Jiayou for your finals!
@siyuan :)
ReplyDeleteSorry for my late reply!
Yup, after all these weeks, I have definitely gained more confidence when I am presenting. However, I know that I still have a long way to go and I am really glad that I have taken a step out of my comfort zone and sign up for this module! It was really an enjoyable and fun journey with you guys! :) And yup, I will try to smile more next time!
All the best for your finals! :)
Hello Amelia :)
ReplyDeleteI definitely felt more at ease during the oral presentation compared to my peer teaching presentation ( though I was still quite nervous that day! ) I guess all the rehearsals with my teammates really helped me alot and gave me the chance to rehearse in front of other people. As for the Q&A part, I felt that I could have answered the questions better. I need to improve more on that section :)
Good luck for your finals and see you tomorrow!:)
Dear lovely Cui Shan,
ReplyDeleteGosh I like the 'jeng jeng jeng' thing. You are so cute! XD
I think most of us felt nervous when we were presenting. It was not just about showing what we have done, but also to persuade and to answer questions from the audience. You are not alone :) Perhaps we can do better if we have more time to rehearse, and like what Kai Liang suggested, to look for friendly faces. :) I tried taking a few deep breath and stop 'rehearsing' the materials in my mind a few minutes before starting. It helps to ease my nervousness. Perhaps you can try too.
I know how much effort you have put in this proposal and presentation. Really really thanks for that! And yup... We love you too, Cui Shan! :)
